13 | Our first view of the imposing Goree island. It was a transfer point of slaves from Africa to the New World. There is today the historical controversy whether Goree Island was the epicenter of the slave trade and just how vital and important was Goree Island. Suffice it to realize that geographically it was the closest African port to America and very convenient to Europe. And it is indisputable that slaves were sent out from Goree by what remains here today of the 39 slave buildings. There is even some of the writings on the walls of these slave houses by the people who were imprisoned here |
